Understanding Your Radiology Bill

Medical billing and insurance processing can sometimes feel confusing. At Cape Radiology Group, we are committed to helping patients better understand their imaging bills, insurance claims, and payment responsibilities through clear communication and accessible support.

Below are answers to some of the most common billing and coding questions we receive from patients throughout Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, and Western Kentucky.

If you need additional assistance, our billing team is available to help.

General Billing Questions

Cape Radiology Group provides professional radiology services, including image interpretation and physician expertise associated with your imaging exam or procedure. Even if your imaging was performed at a hospital or outpatient facility, you may receive a separate bill for the radiologist’s professional services.

Depending on where your imaging was performed, you may receive separate bills for:

  • The imaging facility or hospital
  • The radiologist’s professional interpretation
  • Additional related services

This is common for many imaging and hospital-based healthcare services.

Hospital or facility bills generally cover the use of equipment, supplies, and facility services. Cape Radiology Group bills separately for the professional interpretation and expertise provided by the radiologist reviewing your imaging study.

Radiology services are typically ordered or requested by your physician, specialist, emergency provider, or hospital care team as part of your medical evaluation or treatment plan.

You may receive a bill from Cape Radiology Group if one of our radiologists interpreted imaging performed during a hospital visit, emergency room visit, outpatient procedure, or imaging appointment at one of our partner facilities.

Patients paying out of pocket or seeking self-pay pricing are encouraged to contact the facility before their appointment for a cost estimate.

Costs may vary depending on:

  • The type of imaging exam
  • Use of contrast material
  • Insurance coverage
  • Facility location

Insurance Questions

Cape Radiology Group bills separately for radiology physician services. To process your claim correctly, we may need your insurance information for our billing records.

Insurance claims may be denied or rejected for several reasons, including:

  • Incorrect or incomplete insurance information
  • Coverage limitations
  • Missing prior authorization
  • Deductible or copay requirements
  • Non-covered services under your plan

Our billing team can help review denied claims and discuss possible next steps.

Yes. If updated insurance information is provided in a timely manner or claim corrections are needed, our billing team may be able to resubmit the claim to your insurance provider.

Workers’ compensation claims often require specific billing information, claim numbers, employer details, and authorization documentation. If this information was unavailable or incomplete at the time of service, the balance may temporarily transfer to patient responsibility until the claim is updated.

Many insurance plans apply imaging charges toward:

  • Deductibles
  • Copayments
  • Coinsurance responsibilities
  • Out-of-pocket maximums

Coverage and patient responsibility vary depending on your specific insurance plan.

Your remaining balance may include:

  • Deductibles
  • Copayments
  • Coinsurance
  • Non-covered services
  • Charges applied to your out-of-pocket responsibility

Cape Radiology Group follows the payment guidelines established by your insurance provider.

In most cases, contractual agreements with insurance providers determine the final patient responsibility after insurance processing. Patients with financial concerns are encouraged to contact our billing department to discuss available options.

Coding Questions

Medical coding is the process of translating imaging exams, diagnoses, and procedures into standardized codes used for insurance billing and claim processing.

Correct coding helps ensure:

  • Accurate insurance claim submission
  • Proper reimbursement processing
  • Compliance with healthcare regulations
  • Appropriate communication between providers and insurers

Yes. Insurance companies use diagnosis and procedure codes to determine whether services are medically necessary and covered under your plan.

If you have questions about charges, coding, insurance processing, or billing accuracy, our billing team is available to review your account and help clarify any concerns.

Important Insurance & Authorization Information

Some advanced imaging exams, such as:

  • MRI
  • CT Scans
  • Certain interventional procedures may require prior authorization from your insurance provider before the appointment.

In many cases, obtaining authorization is the responsibility of the referring physician’s office.

Patients are encouraged to verify insurance coverage and authorization requirements before their appointment whenever possible.
